62 - Kickin' Arse and Takin' Names

This is Marimikel aka Mimi!  I first met Mimi in February of 2012  - we immediately clicked as she is a fierce, strong, stubborn woman (much like myself!!) and I knew she was the exactly who I wanted to help me with the birth of my first baby!  While she helped me conquer the fears of my first pregnancy, I started helping her conquer FITNESS!

We began training together April of 2012 and 2 1/2 years later, we still meet 2x a week in my front yard for her weekly dose of CrossFit.   At 62 years of age, she is stronger than ever, full of energy and belief.

Before we started training Mimi had just dropped 40 lbs due to stress and "forgetting" to eat.  She enjoyed swimming and walking but was admittedly inconsistent.  Today her nutrition is a priority - she swims at the YMCA 1-2x a week, and walks her 2 mile course in "record time".

As a coach, I assessed Marimikel's imbalances and took note of her 60+ yr old aches and pains. We celebrated her strong chest/shoulders and took note of areas that needed work.  We focused on learning to engage and building her posterior chain to keep her standing tall.   This has also helped hip pain "disappear". We focused on bi-lateral tools like dumbbells, kbells rather than barbells.  We always go at her pace and have fun!

If you think you are too out of shape, too old, too weak, too pregnant, too WHATEVER for CrossFit - maybe you just haven't found the right coach.

Where there is a will there is a way!
My passion is one on one or small group training.  I love working with people who "think they can't" - if that is you - contact me!  I would love to help you be a better version of you!

Guess I have a 42 min cake/oven!

No baby yet
No induction plan
No, I am not technically "past due".

I've just got a slow cookin' oven this time around.  Today is week 41 and 4 days......
Still feeling good - Patiently waiting for the baby to decide he/she is ready!

Nutrition, Water, and Supplements during my pregnancy

I'll start by saying everyone is different and you should always talk to your care provider about choices you're making during pregnancy!  OK - now that is out of the way....a lot of you have FBed, texted, emailed, or stopped me to ask about how I've stayed "paleo" during pregnancy and about supplements.  First, I don't really like the term "Paleo" because it seems so extreme/limiting and quite possibly not the best choice for everyone!  So this is how I stayed on a "clean" diet during pregnancy and what supplements I took, etc.  I have been fortunate to have had (currently in week 37) a fairly easy pregnancy with the most annoying thing to talk about being heartburn.  BUT I hear that means I'll have a baby with a full head of hair and I'd LOVE that :)

How I ate before vs how I've eaten the last 9 months:
Before pregnancy:  Jeremy and I joke about being boring when it comes to our food, cheats, etc.  We really just eat 90% clean  - no gluten - no dairy - little sugar/fruit.  Our treats are drinks, tortilla chips, nachos now and then and maybe a bite of something else but only rarely.  We're lucky enough to be surrounded by people who live/eat the same way and even our holidays are filled with healthy options (unhealthy too but only if you choose!!!).
During pregnancy:
1st Trimester:  Well, I didn't know I was pregnant but I knew I only wanted eggs, craved fruit (something I usually had less than 1-2x a week) was tired!  Hindsight 20/20 I was also very nauseous and bloated but had an excuse for everything!  Once I found out I was pregnant (week 12) I stopped beating myself up, stopped Sparking to fight the fatigue and I allowed myself fruit, more Kombucha than normal, and settled on eating eggs for breakfast and dinner some days.
2nd Trimester:  Once the nausea decreased, I still didn't want much of my "normal" diet and for about 3-4 weeks added a lot of fruit, oatmeal, rice cakes, trail mix, and peanut butter - just to put on a few pounds!  After about week 22, I could eat "normally" for the most part - except almost every cooked veggie gave me heartburn.  I added more fish and chicken and had less red meat (per the suggestion of my mid-wife).  I found that fresh salads and raw veggies (with Ranch or hummus) replaced my typically cooked kale, brussel sprouts, etc.  This is the OPPOSITE of what a lot of women experience.  In "pioneer days" raw fruits and veggies could be a danger/poison so a pregnant women's body usually rejects them to keep the baby safe.  I tried adding yogurt but found I didn't really like having dairy - I kept the "extra" fruit on my menu and overall found that I ate less protein than in my "training days".
3rd Trimester:  Much of the same until about week 34....that's when heartburn became a 24/7 deal and I didn't have much of an appetite for ANYTHING.  I've focused on getting protein and calories in whatever form works!  I added yogurt back in and this time it's been great - I mix it with Muscle Gain to make sure I get enough protein.  I also added oatmeal and rice cakes again but not as often as before.  Thanks to the help of my husband, Jeremy, I've also had ice cream and a few more treats than normal....he says this is my "grace time" - I am almost done and why not have a couple treats.  I agree KINDA - I mean in the end I don't feel great when I eat sugar, it's not the best nutrients for me or the baby, and I want any weight I put on to be "useful - not just "recreational".
Take Home:
Give yourself a break and listen to your body.  Figure out what you can eat and make it work.  Don't stress over a little dairy - more fruit - or white rice etc if that is all you can eat!  Just be reasonable with portions and make best substitutions ie: PB&J on rice cake rather than white bread.  Figure out what works for you to get the protein and veggies you and your baby needs.  Clean/Paleo eating is possible to maintain during pregnancy.

My Personal Secret Weapons:
Water, Water, Water:  In my experience of keeping a food log and checking dozens of clients' food logs - I've found that a majority of binges, cravings, sweet tooth episodes can be linked to dehydration or fatigue.  That's right - it's my unprofessional finding that if you drink enough water and have enough rest you won't be hit with the cravings you're trying to avoid.  This was particularly true for me during pregnancy.  If I didn't have enough water (or rest) - I wanted sweets, sweets, sweets or just plain didn't want to eat anything healthy.  I felt awful - was never satisfied - constipated -and had low energy.  I immediately started logging water along with food (you know I am a food log dork)......I saw an immediate impact and huge difference in the days that I didn't get enough water.  For me - during pregnancy I needed between 100-150oz of water a day.  That's TWICE as much as I usually drink. That number will be different for everyone - just play around and see what you need - get a big water bottle and drink up.
Perfect Foods 2x a Day:  I've been drinking Garden of Life Perfect Food as a daily supplement for a few years.  While the taste takes some getting use to - the benefits are something I swear by.  It's a great way to get in all your veggies/nutrients even when you can't eat enough spinach, beets, kale, etc!  When my aversion to veggies started in the 2nd Trimester I added a 2nd serving of Perfect Food in the evening.  For me, this was a great way to get my greens, stay alkaline, and regular (TMI??...oh well!)

Supplements per my Mid-Wife's instruction:
Jeremy and I knew we found the right care provider for us when we spent the first hour and a half with our mid-wife listening to her talk about exercise: "if you were doing it - keep doing it unless it hurts" nutrition: "little or no wheat, dairy, sugar - lean meats and veggies"  philosophy: pregnancy is not an illness and we're made to do this - hence, it doesn't have to be awful and can be easily/safely kept out of our traditional health care system!  Along with a big dose of "live the way you've been living but respect the process of creating life" she sent us home with the following list of supplements to take during my pregnancy:
Breakfast:
  • Vit E 400 IU - helps skin stretch, softens pelvic floor, aids in placental attachment
  • Vit C 1000mg - strengthens your and baby's immune system, helps iron absorption
  • Probiotic  - gut health
  • Omega 3 - helps baby's brain and nerve development, prevents cancer
Lunch:
  • Ultra Min (2-3 capsules) - bone health for you and baby, prevents leg cramps and soreness in later stages of pregnancy
  • B50  - prevents nausea, aids muscle and organ development in baby
  • Folic Acid 800mcg a day - aids in baby's liver and neural tube development of baby's spine and skull
Dinner:
  • Vit E 400 IU
  • Vit C 1000mg
  • Beta-Carotene - antioxidant, keeps cornea clear, aids in cell maturation and differentiation
  • Evening Primrose Oil 1000mg - keeps mother soft including lower uterine segment, cervix and birth canal *may increase dosage during 3rd trimester
  • Vit D3
The Calcium Question:
No dairy?  What about calcium?  I hear this from non-pregnant folks and even more from pregnant ladies.
This is directly from my care provider and falls in line with exactly what we/I believe.
"We (New Life Birth Center care providers) feel that dairy products are not a great source of calcium.  Dairy products contain no magnesium, which is necessary for our bodies to absorb calcium.  Macro molecules of calcium found in dairy foods may also be too large for our cells to absorb. Recent studies have suggested that these large molecules can deposit themselves in our joints, contributing to arthritis and other joint problems.  Cow's mils is for baby cows!  Moderation is key.  Get your major portion of calcium form other foods and supplements with an occasional dairy food."   Non-Dairy Calcium Sources

Just because you CAN....

Team #pregofit - Linda 33 weeks, Lisa 31weeks, Caitlin 23 weeks
.....doesn't mean you SHOULD!
That might be what you're saying about our outfits for the Ultra Palooza Exercising For Time Fest pictured above :)   and I might agree~!  Still not sure if I am #proud or #ashamed.....

I am 31 weeks pregnant (do the math almost 8 months) or as I prefer to say now, I have about 10 weeks LEFT!!!! Every week/month I expect the floor to drop out from under me - I keep waiting for the aches and pains - the swelling and cravings.  Instead what I've found is that I continue to feel great.  Now, don't get me wrong - great is relative!  Great still means it's hard to roll over, get up and down from the ground, pick things up, or do as much as I use to!

Honestly, the HARDEST thing about this pregnancy is getting adjusted to how much rest and recovery I need.  I am at a place where about 1/4 of what I use to do is my daily limit.  Not just workouts - but general activity.  A trip to the grocery store on Sunday felt like a marathon and required a nap afterward!

Recently the TRIUNE published an article on CrossFit and pregnancy - the CrossFit Journal also has a great piece on the subject - and these days it's not a novelty to see pregnant women working out and staying fit!  However, there is still much debate about what is "ok" and what is "too much".
DISCLAIMER:  this is my personal/professional opinion but I am not a MD or PT or OBYN, etc, etc.

If you can't breathe - your baby's O2 supply is down too!
If you're tired why use your body's energy for your WOD rather than growing your baby?
My mid-wife put it this way - when the baby  is born you'll say a million times "I'll do ANYTHING for this kid" but NOW is the time that anything you do IS for the baby!  Eat right - rest - let your "chi" go to the baby - workout but LISTEN to your body (and your baby).

My opinion - Just because you CAN  - Doesn't mean you SHOULD!
"Heavy" is relative - "Fast" is relative - "A lot" is relative - so do what feels good and what you've been doing before your pregnancy.  BUT it doesn't make you "more CrossFit" or "Hardcore" to ramp up intensity, test your limits on met-cons, squats, or presses!  Does it pull, hurt, tweak, or leave you exhausted two days later?? DON'T DO IT!  Does it make you feel invigorated, more alive, keep you strong and fit? DO IT.

Today's Strictly Strength WOD
10x2 Box Squats coupled with DB presses, finished off with "Grace".
I could have done 155# box squat and 95# "Grace" but I would feel my pelvis shift on the box squats and my abs don't feel stable with too much weight overhead.  So, I take a spoonful of my own advice (though it's not easy) Just because I could/can - Doesn't mean I should! What do I have to prove at this point?
My WOD:
10x2 Box Squats @ 135# and 30# presses
"Hanging Grace"  aka Grace with Hang Power Clean instead of from the ground with 85lbs.
For some folks that would be "too heavy" but for me it's light and feels great!
No tweaks, no pulls, no twinges!

Be smart - respect your body - enjoy the process!

"Wow - You really are pregnant"

It seems that I am not the only one who forgets I am pregnant (27 weeks/ 6 1/2 months to be exact)
Below are a few things that my "friends" have starting to laugh at me for doing or should I say not being able to do....  The title is something someone said to me after watching me do one of the following:
  • Put on my shoes gracefully - a fews grunts and a crooked tie (off to the side b/c head on is just too much work)  is more my style these days!
  • Get out of the pool - yep, I am that girl swimming thru the other swimmers' lanes to get to the stairs...I can no longer POP up and out of the side of my swim lane!
  • Move around furniture, people, door frames without hitting something - like I said I "forget" I am pregnant and that my size is no longer the same....watch out for the accidental belly bump!
  • Get off the floor and onto my feet - it seems the "roll to one side, push yourself up with your hands and scramble to your feet" is something fun to watch!  I've been doing a lot of floor press and the "get up" is becoming just as much a part of the workout as the press!
  • Make a full day of plans and stick with them - I've hit the point of "I need a nap after an hour of anything"   Sorry in advance if I can't follow thru on my plans with you for the day - I still can't tell when I am gonna get hit with the "sleep now" stick!
Craving/Nutrition Update:  Still no cravings to speak of - The biggest thing I've noticed is that I need  A LOT more water!  I drink between 100-150oz a day and when I don't that is when I "crave" ice cream, fruit, sweets, peanut butter etc.  Keep hydrated and all else stays on track - energy and digestion included!

Workout Update:  The last 3 weeks I can tell the biggest changes/limitations in what I can/want to do!  Getting anything from the ground is just not comfy - so now it's hang positions with bb's, etc.  Any kind of jump is yuck (double unders are actually most comfy b/c the jumps are low).  As my hips/joints get looser and my abs get more stretched - my midwife suggests more pushing than pulling!
My favorite workouts/moves this week:
  1. Butcher push - pick a distance and GO every min on the min for 10
  2. "Prego Fit Lynne"  - DB Press and Ring Row
  3. 20 min on the Airdyne (most comfy met con move right now) 1 min GO - 1 min EASY
  4. Med ball slams  - 30 sec on/30 sec rest for 10 rounds
  5. Swimming - anything in the watter is great - TX is getting HOT and being weightless is more awesome now than ever before.

Flip Side of this #pregofit thing!

Erin, me, Gilly, Heather, Jana, Crystal enjoying a Girls' weekend

Week 23 1/2....aka so freakin' close to 6 months pregnant!  Yes, I can still do A LOT - Yes, I feel great (I mean, I am pregnant but no aches or pains) - Yes, I have maintained my nutrition and fitness.  However, I want to be clear - pregnancy is a totally foreign state and if you're not experiencing some "transition bumps" then call me up and tell me your secret!

SOCIAL:
I've always been a GOER and a DOER and from day 1 Jeremy and I have maintained a "barely at home" schedule.   Recently we went to Regionals for a weekend - worked the week - then I went to the beach for a girls trip the next weekend (hence the photo) and when I returned  I was quickly reminded how much REST I really need.  I've realized that if I don't take at least one day to nap A LOT during the weekend - you won't want to be near me by Wednesday :)  A girls beach weekend is also interesting when you're limited to 1 glass of wine and no coffee!  While I am not a big drinker, it's a totally different approach to no having a rita because of a baby..... I've read a lot more, napped a lot more, and am learning to be LAZY, something I've never mastered.

NUTRITION:
I sweet tooth has crept back into my life......I am yet to give in to ice cream, donuts, or anything other than a couple pieces of chocolate and more fruit than normal - but it's there!  Now you may be thinking the same thing many people have said:  it's just a pregnancy craving and I should just give in, etc.  OH NO, I've been down this path before and what I am experiencing is the sugar addiction that so many Americans have.  The first trimester was tough to eat anything and I truly had cravings for oranges, grapes, yogurt etc.  While all healthy sugars - I am convinced that the boxes of CUTIES I ate are to thank for my current desire for sweets!  As Jeremy said last night - this is my grace period and I've tried to stay sensible while accepting that eating all the right food and staying active does NOT keep away the expanding belly/thighs/etc..... For the most part my diet is 95% the same as it was before the pregnancy.  I have more peanut butter, more Kombucha (sweet fizzy yummmmm), at least 1 fruit a day and less red meat.  Otherwise, my choices and portions are about the same.  The growing baby needs 300-500 calories a day and now my approach is to eat exactly as before and sub 1-2 intense training sessions a day for the production of 1 baby Thiel.

FITNESS:

I am keeping my fitness -etc BUT the reality is - unlike CrossFIT, #PregoFIT is a state that continually declines rather than progresses. Each couple of weeks there is a new modification in my plan, a lighter weight on the bar, a slower pace on the track. The mental game becomes acceptance and appreciation for can STILL be done rather than focus to push what you can do NEXT. As an athlete, I've been trained to push forward - to ignore the fatigue/pain to some degree - now I am focusing on listening to what my body is saying and CHILL OUT! When I do, I am usually rewarded with lots of tickles and pokes from the baby!

A lot of people have asked what can and can't be done - I am not a medical expert but my approach has been:
  •  if you've been doing it - keep doing it UNLESS it involves high impact (hockey, rope climbing) or it HURTS then stop
  • if it feels heavy - drop the weight
  • if your joints feel loose or my abs are pulling - stop
  • if you can't breathe the baby can't either - slow down

INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW (or so it seems):
So far I've gained 11.5 lbs. and am on track to gain at least 10-15 more.  As stated before, eat almost exactly the same as pre-pregnancy.
I workout 5-6 days a week but have cut out "two-a-days" and have started modifying movements.  I still work with intensity but my "10" today is about my "4" from 6 months ago!   I found that I love workouts that are EMOM- every minute on the minute or have calculated rest.
For example,
WOD 1:  EMOM for 10 minutes:  3 shoulder press, 3 sprawls
WOD 2:  5 rounds AMRAP 3 min:  30 ohsq 30 du - REST 2 minutes
Everyone is different - be realistic about where you are and what you can expect from yourself!

I thought I'd be missing out.....

5:30am at CC ATX in "game day" tees for OPEN 12.4

Since I will be 7 1/2 months pregnant in July training for the Games is just a silly thought - as mentioned before I stopped working out with the coaches/competitors at 1pm and started taking classes. Also, since I wasn't meeting with Coach JDP for my own sessions, I began assisting him at ATX to fill a personnel need (and to fill some newly found time in my schedule).

I thought I'd be "missing out" by changing my work and workout schedules.

Boy, was I WRONG!!

6:15am at CC ATX killin' it on the rowers

Being back in classes, as an assistant coach, with JDP has been more rewarding than I remembered! I love the energy from the athletes. I love seeing how excited these "everyday" (but not at all, ordinary!!) people get just as excited about the WODS as the "obsessed and competitive" coaches or CrossFit junkies! It's also been refreshing to really get to meet a the people who support CrossFit Central as a business and get to know our athletes again. I might also add....I admire these early morning folks! I can get up to work (b/c I have to be there) but getting up for a workout at 5:30?!! DEDICATION!

As for being in classes - I might be in the most "badass" group that Travis Holley coaches in Strictly Strength (just saying). The group is motivated - dedicated - and FIT!
It's been awesome.

What I thought what I'd miss the most was doing the OPEN WODs with the Coaches and Competitors at 1pm on Friday. As the competitors ramp UP for the season, I am calming DOWN in my workouts - so I joined Big Mike's 11:30am class for the OPEN WODs. This was the BEST choice I could have made! The environment of this class is incredible - supportive - competitive - FUN - perfect!

I start this week with a new found appreciation for all the CrossFit Central and CrossFit Central ATX athletes - the expertise that Travis and Mike bring to their classes - and excitement for the final 2012 OPEN workout.
